  • WS01_HC - Topic: “Health Care Reform and Physicians: What Does the Future Promise?”

    Presenter: Jason Hockenberry, Ph.D., Health Economist, University of Iowa

    Objective: This workshop will provide participants with insight on how health care reform may impact how physicians in Iowa conduct their practices in the future.


  • WS02_HC - Topic: “Health Care Reform at Work in Iowa”

    Presenter: Laura Sands, Health, Education, Workforce Outreach Liaison, Office of U. S. Senator Tom Harkin.

    Objective: This workshop will familiarize participants with the major features of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act including the immediate benefits of health care reform for individuals and businesses.


  • WS03_HC Topic: “Health Care Reform: An Overview of Near-Term Implications and Perspectives from Iowa’s Largest
                                  Health Insurer”

  • WS04_EE – Topic: “Meeting the Workforce Needs of Iowa’s Green Economy; Preparing Students at the University of Iowa”

    Presenters: Liz Christiansen, Director, University of Iowa Office of Sustainability; and Paula Nissen, Certified Public Manager and Chief for Iowa Workforce Development’s Regional Research & Analysis Bureau.
    Objective: This workshop will provide information on workforce needs in Iowa and educational opportunities at the University of Iowa to meet them.

  • WS05_EE/SB – “Energy Independence for Iowans: How Individuals and Businesses Can Implement Best Energy Choices”

    Presenter: Roya Stanley, Director, Iowa Office of Energy Independence

    Objective: This workshop will provide participants with information about Iowa’s energy choices and how Iowans can access state and federal programs to be a part of saving money, creating new jobs and establishing a robust energy economy for the future.


  • WS06_HC – Topic: “The Color of Health Care”

    Presenter: Jacquie Easley, Director, Community and Diversity Services, Mercy Medical Center

    Objective: This presentation reviews statistics in minority populations including differences in screening, incidence, and prognostic factors and ensures that participants will understand potential barriers to quality care. Participants will also be able to identify techniques to overcome these barriers such as recognition of the specific challenges facing minority communities.


  • WS07_HC Topic: “African American Mental Health: Depression in a Recession”

    Presenter: Virgil A. Gooding, Sr., MA, MSW, LISW, LPHA, Executive Director of Keys to Awareness & Associates

    Objective: Depression is endemic in the African American Community and this workshop will focus upon this reality and how it is exacerbated during economic recession.  Participants will learn how to identify and address symptoms of this often debilitating mental health challenge.


  • WS08_HC – Topic: “Your Pathway to a Career in Healthcare

    Presenter:  Sue Gibbons, Project Director, Central Iowa Works

    Objective:  Participants of the Central Iowa Works Healthcare Sector Board that includes employers, education and service providers have been meeting for two years to address workforce concerns.  In this informational workshop, learn what healthcare employers have identified as high demand jobs and the skills they are looking for when hiring new employees.  Also hear about the training and educational opportunities that have been developed to meet these needs and the special funding programs that could help you pay for the classes.

    As Project Director of Central Iowa Works, Sue Gibbons works closely with business and industry leaders addressing workforce issues in this region.  Sue started in this new position in 2007.  Additional presenters for the workshop represent the health sciences department and the Workforce Training Academy at Des Moines Area Community College.

    Objective: This workshop will serve to inform participants about America’s growing obesity epidemic,
    and provide strategies to overcome weight-related health issues.


  • WS10_SB – Topic: “The Targeted Small Business Program of Iowa Presents Careful Considerations: The Basics of Starting
                                  a Business.”

    Lead Panelist: Lori Young, Marketing & Compliance Manager, Targeted Small Business Program, Iowa Department of Economic Development.

    Panelists: Jason Yates, Loan Administrator and Development, IowaMicroLoan; Dawnelle Conley, Business Development Specialist, U.S. Small Business Administration; Toni Lampley, Program Manager/Microenterprise Trainer, ISED (Des Moines); Guillermo Bailey, African American Business Association; Jamel Kirby, Owner, LeMaj Enterprises; and Terry Vorbrich, Economic Development Coordinator, City of Des Moines

    Moderator: Dr. Denita Gadson, Business Development Director, ISED (Waterloo)

    Objective: This workshop consists of a panel of small business experts that will provide an array of federal, state, and local information for people who are: 1) interested in starting a small business; or 2) current small business owners seeking technical assistance for maintenance and growth.

    Presenters: Sheri Floyd, MSW; Community Operations Coordinator, Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault; and Kendra Malone, MA; Information Specialist, Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

    Objective: Increase awareness about sexual assault as a health issue, and enable attendees to recognize harassing (including stalking) conduct within their surroundings.


3:30 pm Workshops

  • WS13_EE – Topic: “Health Care Education – A Crossroad to Health Care Careers”

    Moderator: Jacquie Easley, Director, Community and Diversity Services, Mercy Medical Center
    Presenters: Dawn Bowker, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Transcultural Clinician, Nursing Department, Mercy College of Health Sciences; Tralanda Davis, Program Chair, Surgical Technology Program, Allied Health Department, Mercy College of Health Sciences; and Dr. Joe Moravec, Professor of Religion and Philosophy within the Liberal Arts & Sciences Department, Mercy College of Health Sciences.

    Objective: Participants will learn more about the career opportunities that are available in health care and how health care education presents unique challenges for students. Even students with previous higher education experience are amazed at the expectations and the rewarding experiences that occur throughout a health science education. This session will explore the opportunities, expectations and joys of health care as a career and a ministry by a panel of three presenters with unique backgrounds. Members of the College admissions staff will also be present to answer program specific questions at the conclusion of the session.


  • WS14_EE – Topic: “I-Jobs” (Iowa’s Infrastructure Investment Initiative)
    Presenters: Jim Larew, Chief of Staff, Governor’s Office; and Dick Oshlo, Director of the Iowa Department of Management.

    Objective: Participants will gain an understanding of Iowa’s Infrastructure Investment Initiative  (I-JOBS), the state’s $875 million investment in Iowa’s infrastructure and how that program is creating jobs, strengthening our economy, and allowing us to build a safer, stronger, greener and smarter state.


  • WS15_EE – Topic: “The New Bread-Winners: Women and the Recession”

    Presenter: Rachel Scott, Executive Officer, Iowa Department of Human Rights, Office on the Status of Women

    Objective: Participants will learn current trends, challenges and opportunities related to women’s employment and wages and will learn practical skills in wage negotiation.


  • WS16_SB – “Small Business Financing 101”

    Presenters: Jeremy Morgan and Karen Cason, both are Personal Bankers at Wells Fargo Bank
